How to Use the Myers Briggs Personality Test to Become a Better Podcaster (and Person)

Caitlin Hawkette Myers Briggs Practitioner

Myers Briggs…

"This natural thing starts to occur where you're being a little bit more compassionate toward yourself because you understand that there's not anything wrong with you...It's just this is the way that you operate. And then, without even trying, you become more compassionate toward other people." — Caitlin Hawekotte

If you want to become a next-level podcaster, the kind of host whom people write to and say — “I just binged all of your episodes, I can’t wait for more” — you have to know what you stand for and who you are.

Seriously, how much space do you give yourself to figure out what motivates you and what your strengths are? How often do you reflect on how you move through the world and how others see you?

One way to get clarity on this is through Myers Briggs, an assessment that helps us better understand ourselves, and also the personalities of others.

Myers Briggs expert and MBTI® Certified Practitioner Caitlin Hawekotte joined me on Podcasting Step by Step to teach my listeners about the 16 personality types and preferences.

Myers Briggs Personality test for podcasters

I’ve wanted to bring Caitlin on to the show for awhile — even before she became one of my Podcast Launch Academy students — because understanding your psychological type, and those of others, will make you a better communicator, and therefore a better podcaster.

But it goes deeper than that. Assessments like Myers Briggs can make you a more compassionate person, to yourself and others. Because you learn that we all see the world through a different lens. You start taking things less personally because you realize that people have different ways of learning and working, different ranges of how much alone time we need, different ways of organizing ourselves (or not).

I recorded this episode in March 2020, with many parts of the world in lock-down due to the coronavirus. Maybe you’re with a partner or a roommate you haven’t been spending a ton of time with lately. And now you’re together 24/7.

If you’ve never gotten to know each other at this deep, personal level, I encourage you to take a Myers Briggs assessment. You can find one of my favorites at 16Personalities.com and it's free.

As you’ll learn from Caitlin’s stories in our Myers Briggs episode of Podcasting Step by Step, this assessment has nothing to do with judgement or who is right or wrong, it simply reveals who you are in the world and what makes you tick, and when you have that awareness of each other and a respect for your differences, your relationship can only grow stronger.

As mentioned, Caitlin is a student in my online course, Podcast Launch Academy, and she’ll soon be launching her podcast Life with an ENFP.

It’s kind of like life coaching for and by someone with an ENFP personality type, but anyone can learn from it, and, personality, I can’t wait to binge Caitlin’s advice on accomplishing goals and establishing routines.

“I'm going to be taking those things that I've learned over the years that have worked very well for me, given the perspective of my being an ENFP, and sharing them with others in hopes that they will be able to follow the things that they're passionate about and get those things out into the world.”
